FULL DAY BIRDING – ABRA MALAGABIRD WATCHING, HUACARPAY, TIPON, PIKILLACTA & ANDAHUYLILLAS

An exceptional bird watching place close to Cusco that is home to a concentration of more than fifty species; around twenty five migratory bird species and twenty occasional species. Huacarpay lake is located about 45 minutes from the city of Cusco and includes specific locations for spotting many endemic bird species of Peru such as the Bearded Mountaineer (Oreonynpha nobilis) and Rusty-fronted Canastero (Asthenes ottonis).

Itinerary:

We come to pick you up from your hotel at 5:30 am, from where our first stop will be Huacarpay Lake – we should be there around 6:00 am. Once we get there, we will start to see many birds of Peru such as ducks, teals, herons, grebes, yellowlegs, lapwings, etc. After those we will start to see the flycatchers, ovenbirds, hummingbirds, tanagers, hawks and others. We will enjoy our breakfast outdoors, among the birds.

The next hours will spend visiting some specific places for the endemic birds of Peru, depending on which species are of particular interest to the group, since our guide has a wealth of knowledge on where each one can be found. After this we will enjoy a traditional lunch of guinea pig.

It is an excellent alternative to visit the South Valley of Cusco. You can explore the magnificent hydraulic architecture in Tipon, the pre-Inca architecture in Pikillacta and the excellent works of art of the Cusqueña School in Andahuayllilas, Tipon, where we will learn more about the hydraulic works, such as the fountain and its wonderful channels, about the system of distribution of the water to every dam. After a guided tour, our trip leads us to Pikillacta, a site which offers us a combination of landscape, history and above all the urban organization. It demonstrates how the surrounding area used to be. Our final destination will be Andahuaylillas, also known as “The Sistine Chapel of America”, where you can find a fabulous collection of Cuzqueña Paintings as well as mural paintings dated to the 16th and 17th century. Within this temple you can appreciate the famous door with inscriptions in five languages, which was completely covered in gold.
