Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Quillarumiyoc – Tarawasi – Chonta (Condors & Stars over the Apurímac Canyon)
Drive time: 4–5 hours Photography Focus: Ancient Inca ruins, golden light on the Andes, soaring condors, and epic night skies We depart early from Cusco, winding through beautiful highland terrain en route to a day packed with Inca heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Our first stop is Quillarumiyoc, an ancient site dedicated to the moon goddess. This rarely visited gem offers a stunning mix of carved rock, terraces, and ceremonial platforms, all surrounded by peaceful, photogenic countryside. It's a great place for morning light and wide shots with soft shadows on the stonework. Next, we visit Tarawasi, another impressive Inca site that blends history and symmetry. Think of strong architectural lines, lush surroundings, and clean light—ideal for documentary-style shots or details of stone craftsmanship.
Golden Hour at Chonta – Condors Over the Apurímac CanyonBy afternoon, we arrive in Chonta, perched above the jaw-dropping Apurímac Canyon. This is one of the best places in Peru to photograph Andean condors in the wild. We hike a gentle trail (around 1.5 hours) to the Condor Viewpoint, where massive cliffs and endless horizons set the stage. As the warm light floods the canyon, you’ll have the chance to photograph condors soaring on thermal currents, often just meters away—wingspans stretching up to 3 meters. Photo Tips:
Use a fast shutter speed to freeze condor flight
Try wide shots to capture condors with the vast canyon below
Late afternoon gives perfect side light for dramatic feather detail
Astrophotography at Chonta – Stars Above the Sacred AndesAfter sunset, the skies over Chonta transform into a dark-sky paradise—high elevation, clean air, and zero light pollution. This is where Andean landscape meets the Milky Way. Set up your tripod for long exposures capturing the silhouettes of canyon walls, distant peaks, and possibly even a condor nest outlined by starlight. With luck and clear skies, the Milky Way arcs dramatically over the horizon, creating unforgettable compositions. Night Shots to Try:
Milky Way arch above the canyon
Foreground with jagged ridgelines or rocky outcrops
Light painting tents or ruins for depth and contrast
Day 2: Chonta – Condor Viewpoint – Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,795 ft)
Drive + Light Hike | Photography Highlights: Andean condors in flight, epic canyon views, and pristine night skies We start our day with a scenic drive to the small village of Chonta, perched above the Apurímac Canyon—one of the deepest in the world. Here lies one of Peru’s best-kept secrets: the Condor Viewpoint. Condor Photography at Apurímac CanyonWith patience and a long lens, you’ll have the chance to capture Andean condors soaring effortlessly on thermal currents. These giants of the sky, with wingspans up to 3.2 meters (10.5 ft), often fly close to the viewpoint, giving you dramatic mid-air portrait opportunities against a rugged, cinematic canyon backdrop. Photo Tip: Use a telephoto lens (200–600mm) for crisp detail. Shoot wide with the canyon in frame to convey the scale and grandeur of the moment. Early to mid-morning offers the best light and condor activity.
Drive to Soraypampa – Golden Hour LandscapesAfter capturing the condors, we journey on to Soraypampa, a windswept highland valley nestled at the base of Humantay and Salkantay Mountains. As we settle into camp, the evening light paints the peaks with warm hues, and the sky shifts into a fiery Andean sunset. Photo Tip: Shoot wide to capture the symmetry of the valley with mountain backdrops. Leading lines from trails or tents can add depth and narrative to your compositions. Astrophotography at Soraypampa As night falls, Soraypampa transforms into a high-altitude observatory. With minimal light pollution and crisp air, it’s a perfect stage for Milky Way shots, star trails, and illuminated tent scenes framed by snow-capped peaks. Astro Tips:
Frame the Milky Way rising behind Salkantay or Humantay
Use headlamps or soft lighting to gently illuminate the foreground
Try long exposures with the mountains silhouetted beneath a starry sky
This day is a dream come true for wildlife and landscape photographers--from sky kings in flight to galactic skies above Andean giants.
Day 3: Soraypampa – Mollepata – Cusco
Drive & light walk time: 3–4 hours Photography Focus: Condors in flight, glacial landscapes, and high-Andes astrophotography We begin the day in Soraypampa, a high-altitude gem cradled between towering peaks. This morning is all about big skies, bigger mountains, and even bigger birds—this is condor country. As the thermals rise, keep your lens pointed up: this is one of the best spots to photograph Andean condors soaring across the dramatic skyline. With luck, you'll catch them gliding effortlessly in front of the snow-capped peaks of Humantay and Salkantay, two sacred apus (mountain spirits) that dominate the horizon. Photo Tip: Use a long lens (200mm+) to isolate condors against the peaks, or go wide to capture the scale of bird and mountain together. Early morning or late afternoon light adds beautiful contrast and dimension.
Landscape + Astro MomentsBefore continuing toward Mollepata and Cusco, take time to photograph the stunning alpine terrain. Lakes, glacial streams, and jagged ridgelines offer endless compositions. The colors here—crisp blues, icy whites, and deep earthy tones—are ideal for both minimal and grand-scale landscape shots. If you’re staying the night in Soraypampa or nearby, brace yourself for a truly epic night under the stars. Astrophotography at Soraypampa: With its high elevation and crystal-clear skies, this is a dream location for Milky Way photography. The silhouettes of Salkantay or Humantay create powerful foregrounds for your night compositions. Best shots:
Milky Way arching over Humantay Lake
Star trails with glacial peaks
Illuminated tents or mountain lodges beneath the cosmos
